Grupo Onyx inaugurated Plaza Madero Atanasio, the Third Complex of its Chain of Shopping Centers in Guatemala

Guatemala, November 23rd, 2016.

Grupo Onyx inaugurated Plaza Madero Atanasio, located at Calzada Atanasio Tzul and 17 calle zone 12. This is the third complex in their Plaza Madero chain of shopping centers in Guatemala.

Mario Lopez Perez, Vice-President of Grupo Onyx, said on inauguration day, “We are very proud to inaugurate our third shopping center, Plaza Madero Atanasio. With an investment of US$6 million, the project has approximately 22,780 square meters of construction and has a convenience center ”strip mall” design that allows visitors and consumers easy access to all stores, ample parking in the center or underground, with a total capacity for 425 vehicles.”

The area where Plaza Madero Atanasio is located has a high population density, with over 77,000 vehicles passing on Calzada Atanasio Tzul each day. This new shopping center seeks to cover this sector of the city of Guatemala, offering a commercial mix that satisfies all convenience needs.

“Plaza Madero Atanasio has a Walmart, a McDonald´s, 34 stores, and ample parking. Just like the other two projects inaugurated in 2015, Plaza Madero Atanasio has a modern and avant-garde design, taking customers into account so they can comfortably do their shopping in a safe and comfortable environment. Currently, we are developing two new projects, one in Guatemala City and the other in the interior of the country,” said José Antonio Moreno, Director of the Real Estate Management Division of Grupo Onyx.

Plaza Madero Atanasio was designed by architectural firm SEIS ARQUITECTOS and built by “Construcciones Nabla, S.A.” and “Construcciones y Consultoría, S.A.” Work started in December 2015, and during construction over 300 jobs were directly created and 150 were indirectly created. Now that the shopping center is functioning, it will generate over 400 permanent jobs, and 200 indirect jobs.

The design of Plaza Madero Atanasio is modern, taking into account every aspect of design and avant-garde style, with an emphasis on the comfort of visitors. The architect Juan Pablo Samayoa, supervisor of the construction by Grupo Onyx explained, “The wide overhangs of over 3 meters over the corridors, which include woodenr ceilings inside, are designed so that our clients feel they are in a friendly and cozy environment. The volumes of the façade and the depth of the stores also ensure that the walk through the corridors has a feeling of movement and good circulation.”

Accessibility in Plaza Madero Atanasio is paramount, which is why there are three entrances and two exits for vehicles to Calzada Atanasio Tzul, as well as vehicular access to enter or exit on 17 calle. Also, as part of environmental responsibility, the project incorporates two wastewater water treatment plants (PTAR due to its acronym in Spanish) and the lighting is mostly LED.

The Group entered the shopping center market with the “Plaza Madero” brand when Plaza Madero Carretera a El Salvador opened in March 2015 and Plaza Madero Roosevelt opened in December of the same year. In 2016, Plaza Madero Atanasio opened i and there are two more complexes that will begin operating in the near term.
