About Us
GROUP ORIGINS
The Group was founded by Mario López Estrada, who began his commercial activities with the company Constructora Maya in 1967. Constructora Maya specialized in real estate, territorial development, low income housing construction, office buildings, shopping centers, and road construction.
In the early 2000s, what is now known as Grupo Onyx was formed. Grupo Onyx encompasses the different companies of the corporate consortium, one of the largest conglomerates in the country.
The most important investment areas of Grupo Onyx are in the real estate industry (with investments in Guatemala and Paraguay), energy, cellular maintenance, telecom product distribution networks, digital services and development, as well as other projects. The corporate social responsibility branch of the corporate group is the Mario López Estrada Foundation.
Mario López Estrada (March 21, 1938 – March 20, 2023) was a Guatemalan businessman, philanthropist, and the founder of Grupo Onyx, a consortium of companies involved in renewable energy generation, consumer products distribution, digital services, and commercial and industrial real estate development in Guatemala and Paraguay. He was also the founder of the Mario López Estrada Foundation.

Mariana López de Lara is a member of the Board of Directors of Grupo Onyx, and is a founding member of the Mario López Estrada Foundation. She holds degrees in Economics and Business Administration, graduating Magna Cum Laude from the Universidad Francisco Marroquín in Guatemala.
Mario López Pérez is president of the Board of Directors and CEO of Grupo Onyx, as well as a founding member of the Mario López Estrada Foundation. He is a Civil Engineer who graduated from the Universidad del Valle in Guatemala.
Gabriela López Pérez is a member of the Board of Directors of Grupo Onyx and is a founding member of the Mario López Estrada Foundation. She has a degree in Marketing from the Universidad Rafael Landívar in Guatemala.

Roberto Bianchi Wohlers
COO
He has been part of the corporate consortium for more than 15 years, holding various senior leadership positions, and currently serves as Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Grupo Onyx. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of several companies within the group and holds the position of President of the Mario López Estrada Foundation. He earned a Degree in Business Administration and a Master’s Degree in Finance from the London School of Economics (LSE).

Diego Donis
Director and Head of Renewable Energy Division
Julio Hernández serves as the Director and Head of the Paraguay Real Estate Division, in this role he is the Country Manager for investments in Paraguay and also Manager of the Paseo Las Galerías complex in Paraguay. He is a Civil Engineer who graduated from Universidad del Valle de Guatemala.
He holds a degree in Business Administration from Universidad Francisco Marroquín and a Master’s in Organizational Management from Universidad de Valparaíso in Chile. He began working at the corporate consortium since 2004 and currently serves as Director of the Real Estate Division of Grupo Onyx.
He has expertise in renewable energy and currently serves as the Director and Head of the Renewable Energy Division of Grupo Onyx, he has been with the consortium since 2013. He is a Civil Engineer and graduated from the Universidad del Valle in Guatemala. He also holds Master’s degrees in both Business and Real Estate Development from the Universidad Francisco Marroquín in Guatemala.
Jorge Dighero
Director and Head of Telecom Division
He serves as the current Director and Head of the Telecom Division and outsourced services. He has worked for Grupo Onyx since 2008. He is an Industrial Engineer who graduated from the Universidad del Valle in Guatemala. He also has an MBA from the EAE Business School in Barcelona, Spain.
Pablo Veliz
CFO
He has served the corporate consortium since 2013 in different project management and financial analysis positions and currently serves as CFO of Grupo Onyx. He is an Electronic Engineer with a degree from the University del Valle in Guatemala and an MBA from INCAE Business School.
Miguel Garcés
Director and Head of Real Estate Development
He has taken part in over 500,000 square meters of management and construction of real estate projects. He is a Civil Engineer with a degree from the University del Valle in Guatemala. He also holds a Master’s degree in Structures, Foundations, and Materials from the Universidad Politécnica in Madrid and an MBA from the Universidad Francisco Marroquín in Guatemala.
Carlos Raúl Morales
Director and Head of Inter-Institutional Relations
He is a retired career diplomat with more than 35 years of experience and formerly served as Minister of Foreign Affairs of Guatemala. He holds a Degree in Legal and Social Sciences, a Master’s Degree in Criminology, and a Doctorate in Strategic Security. He currently serves as Manager of Inter-Institutional Relations at Grupo Onyx and as Vice President of the Mario López Estrada Foundation.
